Sure it is the best Roman's building kept in Torino. It was the main gate to the Augusta Taurinorum,"Porta Principalis". This ancient monument is made up of two towers of about 30metres hight, jointed to a wall that was a part of old guardroom. Just the wall is of Rome origin. The towers was built in a following age. Two large doors was used for the wagon traffic and two smaller for pedestrians. The "Palatine" name derives from medieval age. In that historical period it was been transformed in palace for Longobard dukes.
Later on it was used such as a feminine jail. Before restoration in 1906, tower shoved at top a ring of Ghibelline merlons. The ancient citizen wall was composed of 35 massive towers at regular intervals along the town-wall perimeter. Just beside the Consolata church remains visible a base of this one.
